Progress report June 2023

Hahaha I wrote a 137k book without remembering to blog about it.

Also, I got married. And I kind of have a 14 year old now. That’s all important to mention, I guess.

Anyway, setting aside whatever’s wrong with me, I liked this latest book! It was fun. My beta readers thought so too. Working with them and others on revisions to the plot summary for a query letter took literal days, because it’s a beast of a story, as might be guessed from the wordcount.

In the end, the query letter summary had to be spoilerific. Otherwise, the story arc doesn’t make sense. The most major plot element is actively concealed from Protagonist #1 by Protagonist #2 until the third act, so… It’s not disingenuous to simply say that the characters have no clue what’s going on, but it’s also a much poorer hook than spilling a few secrets.

Here’s paragraph one from the summary, which only spoils two key points:

A detective and a changeling hail a cab. The detective is Lieutenant Bauer, recently kidnapped from an active murder investigation. His kidnapper is the famous Pyre Witch, beloved for defending generations of mortals from a vile curse. In the bottom of her purse, the Witch has a jar, and in that jar is her dead brother. He’s going to be a problem.

And everything escalates from there. And was escalating beforehand as well. This story has an arc like a rollercoaster slamming into a wall, which is what you get with a hyper-active and occasionally hyperactive protagonist who’s seeking to defy reality. I very much enjoyed writing the Witch and her kidnapped detective, so I hope to revisit this world someday.
